Kochi: Renowned Malayalam filmmaker Shafi, celebrated for his iconic comedy films, passed away on Sunday at Aster Medicity Hospital. He was 56 years old. Born as M H Rasheed, Shafi had recently suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. Following a critical brain surgery, he remained on a ventilator until his untimely demise.
Shafi’s journey in the Malayalam film industry began in the mid-1990s when he worked as an assistant director to notable filmmakers such as Rajasenan and the Rafi-Mecartin duo. He debuted as a director with One Man Show in 2001, marking the start of a successful career. Over the years, he directed more than ten films, many of which were box office hits. His impressive filmography includes audience favorites like Kalyanaraman (2002), Pulival Kalyanam (2003), Thommanum Makkalum (2005), Mayavi (2007), Chattambinadu (2009), and Two Countries (2015). His last film, Aanandam Paramanandam, released in 2022, showcased his enduring flair for humor and storytelling.
Shafi was the younger brother of Rafi, a prominent filmmaker from the Rafi-Mecartin duo. Known for his wit, humor, and creative narratives, Shafi’s contributions to Malayalam cinema earned him immense love and admiration.
