In a boost for devotees visiting Sabarimala, BSNL and the Devaswom Board have collaborated to provide free Wi-Fi access at key pilgrimage points, including Nilakkal, Pampa, and Sannidhanam, for up to 30 minutes. After connecting to the BSNL Wi-Fi network, pilgrims can access the internet by entering an OTP sent to their mobile. Following the free half-hour period, devotees can continue browsing by recharging the service. BSNL has set up 48 hotspots: 13 each at Nilakkal and Pampa, and 22 at Sannidhanam. Additionally, a new “Sarvatra” Wi-Fi roaming system is available, allowing BSNL fibre subscribers to use their home internet plans. To activate this feature, users must register through the BSNL portal or at a Wi-Fi Roaming point. To support connectivity along the pilgrimage route, BSNL has also installed 21 mobile towers.
In other positive news for pilgrims, the Kerala High Court has granted temporary permission for cars to park at designated areas, Chakkupallam 2 and Hilltop, during the Mandal Makarvilakku season. This 24-hour parking facility aims to reduce traffic congestion along the route to Sabarimala. Devotees are charged a fixed fee for parking, and 20 KSRTC buses will also have designated parking at Hilltop’s base.
The court’s approval is conditional, allowing police to reinstate restrictions if traffic issues arise. Although KSRTC expressed concerns over the impact on its chain service, the court ultimately approved the Devaswom Board’s request, highlighting the focus on minimizing congestion and ensuring smooth pilgrimage flow during the high-traffic season.
