Thiruvananthapuram Mass Murder: Affan’s Motive Unclear as Police Probe Contradictions

Investigation Continues Amid Conflicting Statements, Psychological Evaluation, and Social Media Analysis

Authorities in Thiruvananthapuram are still struggling to determine the exact motive behind the gruesome Venjaramoodu mass murder case, in which 23-year-old Affan is accused of brutally killing four family members and his girlfriend. The suspect has provided conflicting statements, alternating between financial difficulties and opposition to his relationship as reasons for the crime. Despite intense questioning, police have yet to extract a clear and consistent confession from him.

Funeral of the Victims

The victims—Salma Beevi, Latheef, Shahida, and Afsan—were laid to rest at Pangode Juma Masjid, while Farsana, Affan’s girlfriend, was buried at Chirayinkeezhu Kattumurakal Juma Masjid on Tuesday.

Lone Killer Confirmed Through Forensic Reports

Forensic examination has confirmed that Affan acted alone in carrying out the murders. While his health is gradually improving after consuming rat poison in an apparent suicide attempt, doctors have stated that his liver function remains under observation for the next three days.

Conflicting Accounts and Investigation Roadblocks

Affan has given contradictory reasons for his actions, initially claiming that financial struggles led him to commit the crime. He alleged that his father, Rahim—who is currently abroad—had debts amounting to ₹75 lakh due to losses from a shop. However, his uncle Shameer strongly refuted this, stating that while Rahim does have bank loans, they are not as severe as Affan described. Complicating matters further, Rahim is unable to return to India due to a travel ban linked to financial issues.

Another theory Affan has suggested is that family opposition to his relationship with Farsana drove him to commit the murders. However, police remain sceptical and are thoroughly investigating their social media interactions to verify these claims.

How Did He Kill Five People Without Resistance?

One of the biggest mysteries for the investigators is how Affan managed to kill five individuals using a hammer without raising an alarm. Authorities are now examining whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crime. While there is evidence of alcohol consumption, no direct proof of drug use has emerged so far.

Key Witnesses Unavailable

A major challenge in the investigation is the absence of key witnesses. Rahim remains out of the country, making it difficult for the police to question him directly. Meanwhile, Affan’s mother, Shemi, who survived the attack, is in critical condition in the ICU and unable to provide any statement.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The cyber cell is currently analysing Affan and Shemi’s mobile phones and social media activity to uncover any hidden motives or external influences. Additionally, authorities are closely examining Affan’s psychological state to determine whether any mental health issues or external influences played a role in the crime.

As investigators continue to piece together the puzzle, the lack of a clear motive and Affan’s contradictory statements make this case one of the most complex and shocking murder investigations in recent times.
