In a welcome move for households preparing for Vishu celebrations, the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, better known as Supplyco, has announced significant price reductions on a range of essential commodities. Starting Friday, key items such as pulses, rice varieties, spices, sugar, and coconut oil will be available at reduced prices at Supplyco outlets across the state. This seasonal relief is aimed at supporting families amidst rising market prices, offering discounts ranging between ₹4 and ₹10 per kilogram.
Among the revised rates, chickpeas are now priced at ₹65 per kilogram (compared to the market rate of ₹110.29), while green gram is available for ₹90 per kg instead of ₹126.50. Other popular lentils like urad dal and toor dal are now ₹90 and ₹105 respectively, both reflecting a ₹40+ reduction from prevailing market prices. Half a kilo of red chilli will cost ₹57.75, and coriander at ₹40.95, easing the spice bill significantly. Sugar has also seen a notable dip to ₹34.65 per kg. For cooking essentials, coconut oil in a mixed 1-liter pack (500 ml subsidized + 500 ml non-subsidized) is priced at ₹240.45, well below the market rate of ₹289.77.
Rice lovers will also benefit from the subsidy. Popular varieties like Jaya, Kuruva, and Matta are all available at just ₹33 per kilogram—almost ₹15 to ₹20 cheaper than their market equivalents. Raw rice or pachari comes at an even more affordable ₹29. With this timely intervention, the Kerala government hopes to ease the financial strain on families ahead of the Vishu festival while encouraging more consumers to make use of Supplyco’s public distribution outlets. The move is being widely appreciated as a step that not only supports household budgets but also counters inflationary trends during the festive season.
