In a significant step to boost tourism and reduce travel time, Kerala is all set to introduce the longest ropeway in South India, connecting the scenic districts of Wayanad and Kozhikode. The ropeway will span a total length of 3.675 kilometres, linking the hilltop village of Lakkidi with Adivaram below. This aerial transport will glide over approximately two hectares of lush forest cover, offering travellers a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the Western Ghats’ rich greenery and misty hills. With each one-way ride taking just 15 minutes, this ropeway will slash the current travel time — which is about 40 minutes via the curvy mountain road — to less than half.
Designed with air-conditioned cabins, each cable car will seat up to six people, making it both a comfortable and scenic mode of transport. The system is expected to handle over 400 passengers every hour, ensuring a smooth flow of tourists without overcrowding. A total of 40 support towers will be constructed to hold the cableway between the two destinations. To further support tourism and ease of access, dedicated bus services will run from Bathery to Lakkidi and Kozhikode to Adivaram, complementing the ropeway connectivity.
The ropeway project has received all necessary technical approvals from both the state and central governments. To elevate the tourist experience, the terminals at Adivaram and Lakkidi will be developed into vibrant hubs with facilities such as recreational parks, star-rated hotels, cafes, an amphitheatre, and a modern auditorium. With this infrastructure boost and the upcoming Adivaram–Nooramthodu–Chipilithodu–Thalipuzha road, the region is poised to become a major tourist attraction, combining natural beauty with state-of-the-art amenities and sustainable travel.
