Vizhinjam Port Inaugurated: A New Era for India’s Maritime Strength

PM Modi dedicates the Vizhinjam International Seaport to the nation; high security arrangements in Thiruvananthapuram

India marked a significant milestone today with the formal commissioning of the Vizhinjam International Seaport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The grand ceremony began at 11 AM at a specially constructed stage near the port in Vizhinjam, Kerala. The port, which is poised to become one of the most strategic maritime hubs in South Asia, was officially handed over to the nation amidst tight security and anticipation.

The Prime Minister, who arrived in Thiruvananthapuram for the event, stayed overnight at the Raj Bhavan. He is scheduled to depart the Raj Bhavan at 10:15 AM and will reach the Pangode military base by 10:25 AM, from where he will board a helicopter to Vizhinjam.

Despite receiving an invitation, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has chosen not to attend the ceremony. Authorities estimate that nearly 10,000 people will witness the historic occasion in person. To accommodate the expected crowd, KSRTC will run special services from Thampanoor and East Fort directly to the port.

Security is heightened throughout the city, especially around the port area. From 7:00 to 9:30 AM, access to roads near the port gate at Mullur will be restricted to authorized individuals only. Attendees must carry valid identification. Entry through the main gate is strictly reserved for convoys of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. Parking and public movement in the surrounding areas have also been regulated to ensure smooth proceedings.

Adding to the grandeur of the day, MSC Celestino Maresca, one of the world’s largest container ships, will arrive at the port as part of the commissioning ceremony — symbolizing Vizhinjam’s capability to handle massive global vessels and setting the tone for its international operations.

This event signals not just the opening of a port, but the launch of a transformative phase for India’s maritime logistics and economic connectivity.
