In light of the devastating landslides in Wayanad, the Kerala state government has decided to cancel this year’s Onam celebrations. The decision comes as a response to the tragic events at Mundakkai and Chooralmala, where the worst landslide disaster in the state’s history has resulted in a death toll exceeding 400. The cancellation of Onam festivities reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the unprecedented calamity and focusing on recovery efforts.
Minister Muhammad Riyaz confirmed that the annual Champions Boat Race League, organized by the Tourism Department, has also been called off. This decision underscores the gravity of the situation and the government’s priority to manage the crisis.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that a mass search operation is planned for Friday in the affected areas. The search will cover the Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions, including relief camps and relatives’ homes. The operation will involve transporting interested victims and their families to the disaster sites, accompanied by security personnel and search teams.
The affected areas have been divided into six zones for thorough examination. While various search methods have been employed, a public search is now being conducted based on information from relatives. The Chief Minister has urged the public to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support Wayanad’s rehabilitation efforts.
