At the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), several iconic female actors from the Malayalam film industry were honoured by the Kerala government. The event, held at the Nisagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram, was inaugurated by Minister for Culture and Films, Saji Cherian, who also announced measures to introduce legislation aimed at ensuring safe workplaces for women, including in the film industry. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to address gender equality and safety issues in the workplace.
The event focused on recognizing the contributions of legendary female actors who were active in Malayalam cinema from its early days up until the 1980s. Among those honoured were Shantikrishna, Vidhubala, Menaka, Mallika Sukumaran, K R Vijaya, T R Omana, Hema Chaudhary, and many others who played significant roles in shaping the industry. The Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman, Premkumar, emphasized the festival’s commitment to celebrating the pivotal role of women in cinema.
The actors, in their speeches, expressed their gratitude for the recognition and for the opportunity to reconnect with their peers and share experiences. The ceremony also featured a musical program showcasing memorable songs from the actors’ films, adding a nostalgic touch to the celebration. The event not only highlighted the immense contributions of these actresses to Malayalam cinema but also served as a reminder of the industry’s evolving approach to women’s roles and safety. With the government’s commitment to improving workplace conditions for women in the film sector, this initiative marks a significant step toward fostering a more inclusive and secure environment for all.
