Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant political development, PV Anvar met Kerala Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer on Monday to formally submit his resignation as Nilambur MLA. Following this, he has planned a crucial press conference in Thiruvananthapuram. The resignation comes after Anvar’s recent meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, where he assumed the role of state coordinator for the Trinamool Congress in Kerala.
While Anvar has taken on this key position to bolster the Trinamool’s presence in the state, he has not yet formally joined the party. This strategic decision aims to avert potential disqualification under the anti-defection law. However, with the Trinamool officially announcing his membership, disqualification proceedings seemed imminent. Anvar’s resignation is perceived as a calculated move to preempt such action.
Sources indicate that Mamata Banerjee advised Anvar to step down and contest a byelection in Nilambur, which could amplify the Trinamool Congress’s visibility in Kerala. The byelection is also expected to compel the United Democratic Front (UDF) to expedite discussions regarding the Trinamool’s inclusion in their coalition.
Political observers believe that the byelection could reshape alliances in the state. If Anvar contests, the UDF may be forced to make a definitive decision about expanding their coalition to incorporate the Trinamool Congress, thereby influencing the political landscape in Kerala.
