Wayanad: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are set to arrive in Wayanad on Tuesday as part of the Congress party’s preparation for the upcoming bypolls in Kerala. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi will join them on Wednesday. Priyanka Gandhi, who is also the party’s general secretary, is expected to file her nomination papers for the bypolls on the same day. Several senior Congress leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, three chief ministers from Congress-ruled states, and other prominent figures, will be in attendance to boost the party’s campaign.
Kasargod MP and veteran Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan, who is overseeing the preparations for a major roadshow in Kalpetta, Wayanad, confirmed that Rahul and Priyanka will arrive in Mysore on Tuesday and drive to Wayanad by evening. Sonia Gandhi will join them the next day, flying into Wayanad from Kannur by helicopter just before Priyanka files her nomination. While Priyanka will lead the roadshow, Sonia will not participate but will be present for her daughter’s nomination filing.
Priyanka, Rahul, and Robert Vadra will be staying overnight at Sultan Bathery, while Sonia will join them the following morning. Priyanka is expected to return to Wayanad next week for further campaign activities, aiming to secure a victory margin of five lakh votes.
The CPI has fielded veteran politician Sathyan Mokeri, and the BJP has nominated Navya Haridas, a young former software engineer, for the bypolls. Rahul Gandhi, who vacated the Wayanad seat in favor of Rae Bareli, had won the constituency in 2019 with a margin of 4.6 lakh votes. The Gandhi family’s deep connection to Wayanad is evident, as it is where Rajiv Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in 1991, making this region particularly significant to them.
