New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has once again called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and take decisive steps to restore peace in the conflict-ridden state. Describing the ongoing violence and bloodshed as “deeply disturbing,” Gandhi emphasized the need for reconciliation and healing in the region.
The appeal comes amid escalating unrest, with the discovery of three bodies from a group of six missing persons sparking widespread protests. On Saturday, demonstrators attacked and vandalized the homes of three state ministers and six MLAs, including a residence connected to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s family. The situation prompted the imposition of prohibitory orders in five districts and the suspension of internet services in parts of the state.
Taking to X, Gandhi expressed his dismay over the continued strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has resulted in over 200 fatalities since May last year. “After more than a year of division and suffering, it was every Indian’s hope that the governments at both Central and state levels would prioritize reconciliation,” he stated.
The Congress leader also criticized the prime minister for not visiting the troubled state despite the prolonged ethnic conflict. “I urge the PM once again to visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and healing in the region,” he added.
The Congress party has consistently condemned the Centre’s approach to handling the Manipur crisis, calling for stronger leadership and immediate action to address the humanitarian and political challenges in the state. Meanwhile, security forces have ramped up measures to control the situation, including the use of tear gas to disperse agitated crowds in Imphal.
