An activist on Friday filed a complaint against Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s captain (RCB) Virat Kohli in connection with the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the franchise’s maiden IPL victory celebration, which killed 11 people. The complaint was lodged by HM Venkatesh, a resident of Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, at Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park police station, located near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
In response, the Cubbon Park police stated that the complaint will be considered under an already registered case and will be verified during the investigation. On Wednesday, 11 people died and over 50 others were injured in the stampede near the cricket stadium when a special felicitation ceremony was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to honour the RCB players after the franchise won their maiden IPL trophy after 18 years.
According to preliminary information provided to the Karnataka government, a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium premises collapsed under the weight of people standing on it, sources said. The sudden collapse caused panic and a stampede occurred, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Those who died included young men and women between 13-35 years old.
The Bengaluru Police registered a case against the RCB team, the KSCA, DNA Entertainment Private Limited and others in connection with the stampede. Earlier today, police arrested RCB marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, and detained three staff members of DNA Entertainment Private Limited, the organiser of the victory celebration, following the stampede.
