Boxing Day Test: Young Gun Konstas Shines with Fifty, Australia 112/1 at Lunch

Australia Gains Early Momentum in Decisive Border-Gavaskar Trophy Clash

The Boxing Day Test between India and Australia kicked off with high anticipation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as Australia ended the first session at 112/1 in 25 overs. Usman Khawaja (38*) and Marnus Labuschagne (12*) remained unbeaten at the crease, following an impressive start led by 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas. Konstas, opening alongside Khawaja, smashed a quick 60 runs before being dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja.

Australia opted to bat first after winning the toss, with skipper Pat Cummins expressing confidence in the team’s lineup. The inclusion of uncapped U19 star Sam Konstas proved impactful. Konstas has been in the spotlight since his stellar performances in the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 and the Australia A series against India, where he delivered crucial innings, including a match-winning 107 in a warm-up pink-ball game.

India, led by Rohit Sharma, made one change to their playing XI, with Washington Sundar replacing Shubman Gill. Rohit confirmed his move to the top of the batting order, emphasizing the importance of adapting to challenging situations as the series, currently tied at 1-1, heads into this critical match.

Both teams are eager to gain a decisive advantage, with the ICC World Test Championship final spot at stake. Australia’s solid start sets the tone for an intense contest in this fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
