Champions Trophy 2025: India to Play Matches in Dubai Under Hybrid Model

ICC Finalizes Hybrid Model for Major Events; New Agreement Extends Until 2027

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has agreed to implement a hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy, allowing India to play its matches in Dubai. This decision, finalized during an informal meeting at ICC headquarters in Dubai, involved ICC President Jay Shah and Board of Directors, including representatives from Pakistan.

The tournament, scheduled for February-March next year, will be co-hosted by Pakistan and the UAE. India’s participation in Dubai ensures a “win-win situation” for all stakeholders, as per ICC sources. Pakistan, which had initially threatened to boycott the event, agreed to this hybrid format, demanding a reciprocal arrangement for ICC events through 2027.

Under this agreement, Pakistan will play its matches in Sri Lanka during the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup, which India is set to co-host. The Indian women’s team may also play Pakistan at a neutral venue during the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup if the schedule necessitates.

The arrangement has delayed the Champions Trophy schedule, leaving fans and broadcasters awaiting updates. Star Sports representatives were in Dubai to discuss operational plans but postponed the meeting to Saturday.

Tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, with India refusing to tour Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, citing security concerns. This hybrid model seeks to balance cricket diplomacy and logistical challenges while prioritizing the sport’s growth globally.
