D Gukesh Arrives in Germany for Carlsen’s Freestyle Chess Grand Slam

Indian World Champion Set to Compete Against Top Grandmasters in Innovative Chess Format

The suspense surrounding Indian World Champion D Gukesh’s participation in Magnus Carlsen’s Freestyle Chess Grand Slam is finally over. Chess player and commentator Fiona Steil-Antoni confirmed Gukesh’s arrival in Weissenhaus, Germany, by sharing a picture of him in a striking red blazer ahead of the event’s opening on Friday.

This high-profile tournament, co-owned by Carlsen, will feature an elite lineup, including the world’s top four players—Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Gukesh. Other notable participants include Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Levon Aronian, Vladimir Fedoseev, Vincent Keymer, and Javokhir Sindarov. The tournament marks the first leg of the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, running from February 7 to 14.

The event had previously sparked controversy due to a dispute between FIDE and the organizers, Carlsen and Jan Henric Buettner. Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand chose to withdraw from the event after FIDE clashed with the hosts over its designation as a World Championship event. The issue was later resolved when the title was removed, prompting FIDE to relax its stance, allowing top players like Gukesh to participate.

Despite the initial uncertainty regarding Gukesh’s involvement, his confirmed presence has now set the stage for an electrifying competition, with chess fans eagerly anticipating a showdown between Gukesh and Carlsen.

What is Freestyle Chess?
Freestyle Chess, also known as Chess960 or Fischer Random Chess, is a variant conceptualized by the legendary Bobby Fischer. Unlike traditional chess, where piece placement follows a fixed setup, Freestyle Chess involves randomly shuffling the back-rank pieces, resulting in 960 possible starting positions. This format eliminates deep theoretical preparation, making the game more creative and dynamic. Both Gukesh and Carlsen have expressed their love for this variant, as it pushes players to rely on pure strategic and tactical skills rather than memorized opening lines.

With the stage now set in Weissenhaus, the chess world is gearing up for a week of thrilling and unpredictable battles in this innovative format.
