Jasprit Bumrah Bows Out of Test Captaincy Race as Gill, Pant Emerge Frontrunners

With Rohit Sharma retired and Virat Kohli likely to exit, India faces a leadership transition ahead of England series

Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket, the race for India’s next Test captain has intensified, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah reportedly opting out of consideration. According to a report by Sky Sports News, Bumrah has informed the selectors that he cannot guarantee participation in all five matches of a lengthy Test series, citing concerns over workload management. His decision comes ahead of India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England, and the selectors are said to favour a leader who can commit to the full schedule.

With Bumrah no longer in contention, the focus now shifts to Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, both of whom are being considered for the captaincy. The player who isn’t chosen as skipper is expected to be appointed vice-captain. The final decision and official squad announcement are expected by May 24.

In a parallel development, Sky Sports News has also reported that Virat Kohli has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his intent to retire from Test cricket ahead of the new World Test Championship cycle beginning in June. Though the BCCI hasn’t made an official announcement, they have neither confirmed nor denied the report. Kohli is believed to have communicated his decision to chief selector Ajit Agarkar as early as April. A follow-up meeting between Kohli and BCCI officials is reportedly in limbo due to government-issued travel advisories amid increased border tensions with Pakistan.

India now faces a significant leadership transition as two senior players prepare to step away, signaling a new era for the national Test team.
