The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has addressed the controversy surrounding Sanju Samson’s omission from the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, following his absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy training camp. KCA president Jayesh George clarified that Sanju failed to provide a valid reason for his withdrawal, sparking criticism from cricket enthusiasts and prominent figures like Shashi Tharoor.
Tharoor accused cricket authorities of sidelining Sanju due to ego, despite him notifying KCA about his unavailability. Responding to these allegations, George explained, “Sanju sent a short email to the KCA secretary stating he wouldn’t attend the camp but did not specify the reason. After the camp concluded and the team was announced, he sent another email saying he was available. As a senior player, he should have communicated more effectively and provided a valid reason for his absence.”
Reports suggest that the BCCI selectors were also disappointed with Sanju’s lack of commitment to domestic cricket, viewing his absence without explanation as unprofessional. This could have influenced his exclusion from both the Vijay Hazare Trophy team and the Champions Trophy squad.
