In a stunning turn of events, Kerala claimed a remarkable 43-run victory over a heavily favored Mumbai side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. The dramatic win unfolded at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, with Salman Nizar delivering an outstanding batting performance and MD Nidheesh dazzling with the ball. The triumph is particularly significant, as the Mumbai squad boasts top-tier national players, including captain Shreyas Iyer and former skipper Ajinkya Rahane.
Mumbai won the toss and opted to bowl first. Kerala’s innings got off to a shaky start with skipper Sanju Samson (4) and Mohammad Azharuddin (13) departing early. However, Rohan Kunnummal (87) and Salman Nizar (99 not out off 49 balls) rebuilt the innings with a brilliant partnership, propelling Kerala to a formidable total of 234/5 in 20 overs. Mumbai’s Mohit Avasthi emerged as their standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 44 runs.
Mumbai’s chase began with promise as Prithvi Shaw contributed 23 runs before being dismissed. Captain Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the innings, with Rahane impressing with a 68-run knock off 35 balls. However, once Rahane fell, Mumbai’s batting lineup collapsed under pressure. MD Nidheesh led Kerala’s bowling attack, picking up four wickets, while Vinod Kumar and Abdul Basit chipped in with two wickets each.
Kerala’s remarkable performance not only upset Mumbai’s star-studded team but also highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to shine under pressure. This victory cements Kerala’s position as a force to be reckoned with in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
