KKR Crush SRH with Dominant 80-Run Victory at Eden Gardens

Defending Champions Kolkata Knight Riders Bounce Back in Style Against Sunrisers Hyderabad

After two losses in their last three games, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) needed a strong performance to reaffirm their status as defending IPL champions. They found the perfect opportunity against last season’s finalists, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), at Eden Gardens. KKR delivered a resounding 80-run win, making a clear statement that they remain a top contender in IPL 2025. In contrast, SRH, who had begun their campaign with a dominant 44-run win over Rajasthan Royals, now find themselves on a downward spiral with three consecutive defeats. Chasing 200/6, SRH’s batting lineup crumbled, managing only 120 in 16.4 overs, a stark contrast to their explosive 286/6 opening match performance.

SRH’s batting collapse was stark and unexpected, with only Heinrich Klaasen (33) and Kamindu Mendis (27 off 20 balls) showing some resistance. Travis Head (2), Abhishek Sharma (2), Ishan Kishan (2), and Aniket Verma (6) failed to get going, while Nitish Kumar Reddy (19) struggled to make an impact. KKR’s bowling attack was ruthless, led by Vaibhav Arora (3/29), who dismissed key batters, including impact substitute Head. Varun Chakravarthy (3/22) delivered a sensational spell, nearly claiming a hat-trick, while Andre Russell (2/21) picked up two crucial late wickets, boosting his confidence amid his recent dip in form.

Earlier, Pat Cummins’ decision to bowl first after winning the toss seemed promising when Quinton de Kock (1) fell early to Cummins, followed by Sunil Narine (7), dismissed by Mohammed Shami. However, KKR quickly stabilized as Ajinkya Rahane (38) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (50) settled in, steering their team towards a competitive total. The standout innings came from Venkatesh Iyer (60 off 29 balls), who top-scored with a blistering knock, while Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 32 provided the finishing touches. Rahane and Raghuvanshi built an 81-run partnership for the third wicket, while Iyer and Rinku combined for a match-winning 91-run stand. This dominant performance puts KKR back among the IPL frontrunners, while SRH must regroup to break their losing streak.
