Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after suffering a life-threatening injury during the third One Day International against Australia. He fell awkwardly on his ribs while taking the catch of Alex Carey in the 34th over of the match. He walked off the field immediately and never returned. The impact caused a serious injury below his left rib cage, leading to internal bleeding and dangerously low body vitals.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team acted swiftly after Iyer’s vital parameters fluctuated upon his return to the dressing room, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. The 30-year-old will likely stay in a Sydney hospital for about a week before doctors consider him fit to return to India.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI media release said.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
The 30-year-old is not part of the T20 International (T20I) squad against Australia. The five-match series will get underway from October 29 (Wednesday) onwards. In his two innings in the ODIs, Iyer managed 11 and 61. Overall, he has scored 2,917 runs at 47.81 in the 50-over format for India at a strike rate of 99.
