Switzerland Triumphs Over Hungary 3-1 in Euro 2024 Opener

Switzerland fended off a resilient Hungary to secure a 3-1 victory in their European Championship opening match on Saturday. Goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer, both surprise selections in the starting lineup, gave Switzerland a commanding lead at halftime. Hungary’s Barnabas Varga reignited hopes with a header, but Breel Embolo sealed the win with a stoppage-time lob over the goalkeeper.

Duah, playing only his second game for Switzerland, opened the scoring with a low shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, assisted by Aebischer. Aebischer then doubled the lead just before halftime, evading Attila Fiola and curling a low shot past Gulacsi.

Hungary responded in the 66th minute with Varga’s diving header off a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai, sparking celebrations among Hungary’s passionate fans. Despite Hungary’s sustained pressure, they couldn’t equalize.

Switzerland’s win places them second in Group A, following host nation Germany’s 5-1 victory over Scotland on Friday. This match marked Hungary’s first competitive loss since September 2022.
