Vignesh Puthur Sets IPL Record, Surpasses Sreesanth as Kerala’s Fastest to 5 Wickets

Uncapped Kerala Spinner Makes Instant Impact for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025

Young left-arm wrist spinner Vignesh Puthur has emerged as a breakout performer in IPL 2025, creating history by becoming the fastest Kerala bowler to take five wickets in the IPL. Representing Mumbai Indians, Vignesh has impressed with consistent performances in all three of his matches, grabbing at least one wicket in each outing. This feat places him ahead of some of Kerala’s most recognized names in IPL history, including Sreesanth, Basil Thampi, and Sandeep Warrier. Remarkably, while other Kerala bowlers took at least six games to reach the five-wicket milestone, Vignesh did it in just three appearances.

What makes Vignesh’s achievement even more striking is that he has done so without playing a single match for Kerala’s senior domestic side. Unlike predecessors such as Sreesanth or Thampi, who had already made their mark in the domestic circuit before their IPL stints, Vignesh arrived on the big stage with minimal prior exposure. His debut against Chennai Super Kings saw him grab 3/32, followed by 1/21 against Kolkata Knight Riders and 1/31 against Lucknow Super Giants. All five wickets came via catches, showing his knack for forcing errors from batters.

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, seem to have discovered a rare talent in the 24-year-old, giving him regular opportunities despite his uncapped status. His ability to handle pressure and make early breakthroughs has already set him apart from other Kerala players who have graced the IPL. With plenty of the season still left, Vignesh is poised to become one of the standout stories of IPL 2025, potentially opening the door for a bright future in Indian cricket.
