Former wrestler and current legislator Vinesh Phogat has revealed plans to invest her ₹4 crore prize money from the Haryana government into building a state-of-the-art sports academy for aspiring athletes. The sum was awarded to her under the state’s sports policy, which grants Olympic medalists the choice of a cash prize, government job, or land. Despite being disqualified from the women’s 50kg final at the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit by just over 100 grams, Phogat was honored with the silver medal reward due to her outstanding performance leading up to the final bout.
Taking to social media, Phogat expressed that her mission now goes beyond personal accolades and is focused on fostering the dreams of thousands of young athletes. Emphasizing the emotional significance of the prize, she said it represents not just a reward but a chance to realize a long-held aspiration. “It has always been my dream to build a world-class facility where emerging sports talent can thrive,” she stated. “Now, as a public representative and someone who has lived the struggles of a sportsperson, it’s my responsibility to create a safe and inspiring space for future champions.”
Phogat further urged the public to join her in this journey, highlighting that this initiative belongs to the entire community. “The academy will be a place where no young athlete is held back due to lack of support or infrastructure,” she said.
