Guwahati: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Morigaon district in the early hours of Thursday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were felt in Guwahati and several other parts of the state, triggering concern among residents.
The quake occurred at approximately 2:25 a.m. at a depth of 16 kilometers. The NCS confirmed the details on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam.”
While the full extent of the earthquake’s impact remains unclear, preliminary reports suggest no significant damage or casualties. Residents of Guwahati reported noticeable shaking of furniture and household items, but no major structural collapses were recorded.
Assam is highly vulnerable to seismic activity, as it falls within Seismic Zone V, the highest earthquake risk zone in India. The region has witnessed devastating quakes in the past, including the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (8.6 magnitude) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (8.1 magnitude)—both among the strongest in recorded history.
The latest tremor follows a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck the Bay of Bengal on February 25. That quake, recorded at a depth of 91 km, was felt in Kolkata and parts of West Bengal, causing momentary panic but no immediate reports of damage.
Authorities continue to monitor the seismic activity closely, reminding residents to remain cautious and prepared for aftershocks.
