Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, which claimed the lives of several civilians and left others injured. His statement came more than 24 hours after the incident, drawing criticism from various Indo-Canadian groups for the delay in addressing such a grave act of violence.
Taking to social media platform X on Wednesday, Carney expressed his sorrow, stating: “I am horrified by the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, a senseless and shocking act of violence that has killed and injured innocent civilians and tourists.” He emphasized Canada’s stance against terrorism by adding, “Canada strongly condemns this terrorist attack. We offer our condolences to the victims and their families.”
Carney’s delayed response stood in stark contrast to the prompt reactions from other G7 leaders. U.S. President Donald Trump was the first to comment, with swift condemnations also coming in from leaders of Italy, the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan.
The silence from the Canadian leader, especially amidst his active campaign for the April 28 federal elections, prompted outrage from members of the Indo-Canadian community who felt the delay reflected a lack of urgency or empathy towards the tragedy. With this late but firm condemnation, Carney now joins international counterparts in denouncing the attack and standing in solidarity with the victims and the people of India.
