Kerala’s Unique Flavors: ‘One Local Government, One Product’ Scheme Showcases Regional Delicacies

Promoting Local Specialties like Fish, Tapioca, and Jackfruit Across Kerala’s Districts

Kerala’s ‘One Local Government, One Product’ (OLGP) scheme is bringing regional flavors to the forefront, with each local government body highlighting a unique product that represents its community. Kozhikode Corporation, for example, has selected fish as its signature product—a choice that not only nods to its coastal identity but also underscores the importance of seafood to the region’s economy and culture. This state-wide initiative has encouraged 456 local bodies to embrace their distinctive local products, from fish to jackfruit, tapioca, and other regional staples, showcasing Kerala’s rich agricultural and culinary diversity.

The OLGP scheme, launched last year, aims to create stronger market opportunities for native products while helping farmers and small business owners earn fairer prices. By developing value-added versions of these products, the program hopes to enhance income potential across the state. The Directorate of Industries and Commerce, under Kerala’s Industries Department, will aid local governments in creating Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and provide each local body with up to Rs 50,000 in financial assistance.

When multiple panchayats within a district select the same product, the possibility of joint ventures is being considered to maximize resources and impact. These local bodies have submitted their product choices to the Industries Department, which will also offer technical support for successful implementation. Sales channels for these products will be expanded via government-sponsored fairs and e-commerce platforms, ensuring greater visibility and access.

Among the products chosen by local bodies are diverse items including coconut, rice, coir, milk, spices, and tea, as well as traditional favorites like nendran bananas, breadfruit, and cardamom. Through OLGP, Kerala is not only fostering economic growth but also preserving and celebrating its unique culinary heritage.
