Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi visited Iran on Sunday for critical talks amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Israel, sparked by the recent killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran while attending the inauguration of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian. This assassination has heightened fears of further conflict between Iran, which supports Hamas, and Israel.
During his visit, Safadi met with Iran’s acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri and President Pezeshkian. Pezeshkian condemned the killing as a “grave” and “brazen” act by Israel and promised retaliation. Safadi’s discussions also included regional and international issues, and he delivered a message from Jordan’s King Abdullah II regarding the situation and bilateral relations.
King Abdullah had previously spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron, calling for increased international efforts to de-escalate the situation and prevent the conflict from spreading regionally. In response to the escalating violence, Iran has engaged in talks with several Arab countries, reiterating its right to respond to Israeli actions.
The situation intensified following the killing of Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander backed by Tehran, which Israel attributed to a rocket strike on the Golan Heights. These recent incidents are part of a broader pattern of escalating regional tensions involving Iran-backed militant groups across the Middle East.
