US Vice President Kamala Harris has launched her presidential campaign with a focus on challenging Donald Trump’s “wild lies” and positioning her bid as a people-powered effort. Speaking at a Massachusetts fundraising event with notable guests like James Taylor and Yo-Yo Ma, Harris acknowledged the tough race ahead but expressed confidence in her campaign’s ability to overcome the Republican rival’s attacks. The event raised $1.4 million for her campaign.
Harris criticized Trump for his “weird” allegations, including false claims about her stance on abortion. She emphasized her commitment to defending abortion rights, which became a central theme after the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning the national right to the procedure.
Trump, now the oldest major-party nominee at 78, has been addressing various audiences, including a Bitcoin conference in Tennessee where he promoted the idea of making the US the “crypto capital of the planet.” Despite previously dismissing cryptocurrency as a “scam,” Trump now sees it as a key industry for future economic growth.
Harris’ campaign faces challenges but has gained traction, with recent polls showing a close race against Trump. Support from Democratic leaders, including President Biden and former President Barack Obama, has bolstered her position. Harris aims to become the first female president in US history, and her campaign is gathering momentum despite Trump’s longstanding political presence and recent attempts to mobilize support with new rallies and media appearances.
Trump, recovering from an assassination attempt at a recent event, continues to focus on energizing his base and asserting his position in the race. Meanwhile, Harris is building her campaign on a foundation of grassroots support and advocacy for key issues like abortion rights and democratic values.
