Seoul (South Korea): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a stark warning, threatening to annihilate South Korea with nuclear strikes if provoked. The aggressive rhetoric follows recent remarks by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who warned that any attempt by Kim’s regime to use nuclear weapons would lead to its downfall. While such verbal confrontations between the rival Koreas are not new, tensions are escalating due to North Korea’s ongoing missile tests and revelations about its nuclear facilities.
According to state media, Kim made his remarks during a visit to a special operations unit, emphasizing that North Korea would not hesitate to deploy its full military arsenal, including nuclear weapons, if its sovereignty were threatened by South Korean forces. Kim’s statement directly responded to President Yoon’s Armed Forces Day speech, in which South Korea showcased its most powerful conventional weapons, including the Hyunmoo-5 missile, as part of the South Korean-U.S. alliance’s “resolute” defense strategy against the North. Kim criticized Yoon’s comments, calling him “abnormal” and mocking his confidence in countering a nuclear power with conventional arms.
Since adopting a more aggressive nuclear doctrine in 2022, Kim has frequently threatened preemptive strikes, although experts doubt he would act on these threats due to the superior military capabilities of South Korea and the U.S. Nonetheless, diplomatic channels between the two Koreas have been frozen since 2019, exacerbating the already heightened tensions. Recently, North Korea has also flown balloons filled with trash into South Korean territory, further fueling hostilities along the border. As North Korea continues to push its nuclear agenda, the possibility of reconciliation seems increasingly remote, with both nations locked in a dangerous cycle of provocation and retaliation.
