The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has shifted its stance on the origins of Covid-19, indicating that a laboratory leak is “more likely” the source of the virus than natural transmission from animals. This reassessment follows the confirmation of John Ratcliffe as CIA Director during the second term of former President Donald Trump, with Ratcliffe prioritizing the investigation into the pandemic’s origins.
Ratcliffe, who previously served as Director of National Intelligence, emphasized in a recent interview that the agency would take a more proactive role, stating, “The CIA is going to get off the sidelines.” According to a statement from the agency, the revised conclusion is based on “low confidence” but leans towards a research-related origin, citing intelligence suggesting the Wuhan Institute of Virology as a potential source.
While the CIA had previously refrained from definitive judgments, the updated assessment aligns with similar views expressed by other agencies like the FBI and the Department of Energy, albeit with varying degrees of certainty. However, the majority of the intelligence community continues to lean toward a natural spillover event.
This shift stems from a fresh analysis initiated by former CIA Director William Burns, which highlighted inconsistencies in earlier evaluations. Advocates of the lab-leak theory cite Wuhan’s prominence in coronavirus research and its distance from known bat populations as supporting evidence.
