A devastating missile attack carried out by Russia has claimed the lives of more than 20 people in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, according to the city’s acting mayor, Artem Kobzar. The assault took place on Sunday as residents had gathered to observe Palm Sunday, turning what should have been a peaceful religious day into a scene of horror and destruction.
Kobzar confirmed that two ballistic missiles struck the city center, causing significant casualties and widespread panic. In an emotional message shared on social media, he expressed the community’s sorrow, stating, “On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy. Unfortunately, we already know of more than 20 deaths.”
The timing of the attack is particularly alarming, as it occurred just a day after both Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers accused one another of breaching a tentative ceasefire arrangement mediated by the United States. The agreement was intended to prevent further targeting of critical energy infrastructure on both sides, but the Sumy attack raises serious doubts about its viability.
