Hsinchu, Taiwan: Taiwan has raised its alert levels after detecting 47 Chinese military aircraft near the island within a 24-hour period, marking the highest daily count since Beijing’s large-scale military drills two months ago. This escalation follows speculation that China might increase military activities in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s recent visits to the United States.
On Monday, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported heightened vigilance after spotting Chinese warships and coast guard vessels in proximity to the island. Additionally, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) designated airspace off China’s eastern coast for military operations, further intensifying regional tensions.
By Tuesday morning, Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed the presence of 47 Chinese aircraft and 12 warships in the vicinity within the preceding 24 hours. The ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the island’s security and maintaining a robust defense posture.
Taiwan identifies itself as a sovereign entity with its own government, military, and currency. However, Beijing continues to assert its claim over the island as part of its territory and has not dismissed the possibility of using force to achieve unification.
