Thai Prime Minister Declares USD 400 Million in Assets: Luxury Watches and Designer Bags in the Spotlight

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Youngest Member of Thailand’s Prominent Political Clan, Reveals Wealth Amidst Political Legacy

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared assets exceeding USD 400 million, according to her party’s announcement. Among her notable possessions are over 200 designer handbags valued at more than USD 2 million and 75 luxury watches worth nearly USD 5 million. The asset disclosure, mandated by Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), was released in a document shared by local media.

As the youngest daughter of billionaire and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn assumed office in September, becoming the fourth member of her family to lead Thailand in the past two decades. Her declaration revealed a total wealth of 13.8 billion baht (approximately USD 400 million), with significant investments amounting to 11 billion baht and liquid assets totaling another billion baht. Her declared liabilities stood at nearly five billion baht, giving her a net worth of 8.9 billion baht (around USD 258 million).

The declaration also included properties in London and Japan, alongside other significant holdings. A representative from the Pheu Thai Party confirmed the authenticity of these figures.

Paetongtarn’s father, Thaksin Shinawatra, is a prominent figure in Thailand’s political and business landscape, with a net worth of USD 2.1 billion. Known for his Shin Corp telecommunications empire, Thaksin leveraged his wealth to enter politics, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the country even during his years in exile following a coup.

This disclosure underscores the family’s enduring influence in Thai politics and raises questions about wealth accumulation among political elites.
