In a significant diplomatic development, former US President Donald Trump, after talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced the approval of Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India. Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is accused of involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed the lives of 175 people and injured over 300. The US Supreme Court had earlier rejected Rana’s review petition, clearing the path for his extradition.
Trump, emphasizing counterterrorism efforts, stated that India and the US would collaborate like never before to combat radical Islamic terrorism globally. Rana’s involvement in the Mumbai attacks, his connections with Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorist David Coleman Headley, further underlined the necessity of his extradition.
US Strengthens Military and Economic Ties with India
The Trump-Modi meeting also focused on expanding defense cooperation, with Trump revealing plans to sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to India.
