
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024 has been awarded jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their revolutionary discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. Their research, which focused on the small roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), provided significant insights into how genes are regulated in multicellular organisms. Despite its tiny size, C. elegans has specialized cell types similar to those found in more complex animals, making it an ideal model for studying cell development.
The Nobel Committee emphasized that although every cell in our body contains the same set of genes, only specific genes are activated depending on the cell type. This process, known as gene regulation, ensures that the right set of instructions is followed in different tissues, like muscles or nerves. Ambros and Ruvkun’s work on microRNA revealed how this small but powerful molecule helps regulate gene expression by silencing certain genes after they are transcribed, profoundly influencing cellular behavior.
Victor Ambros, born in New Hampshire in 1953, earned his PhD from MIT and currently holds the position of Silverman Professor of Natural Science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Gary Ruvkun, born in California in 1952, received his PhD from Harvard University and is now a Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Their discovery has reshaped our understanding of genetics and has implications for the development of new medical therapies.
The Nobel announcements continue with the Physics, Chemistry, and Literature prizes to be revealed in the coming days, culminating with the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday and the Economic Sciences prize on October 14.
