Apple is reportedly working on a next-generation AirPods model featuring tiny built-in infrared cameras, enhancing both spatial audio and AI-driven functionalities. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is exploring outward-facing infrared sensors that could feed data to AI and improve user interactions.
What’s New in the 2026 AirPods?
As per Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to mass-produce these advanced AirPods by 2026, incorporating infrared cameras similar to the Face ID sensors on iPhones. These cameras are expected to work seamlessly with the Apple Vision Pro headset, offering a more immersive spatial audio experience.
For instance, if a user turns their head while watching a video with Vision Pro, the sound from that direction could be emphasized, creating a more realistic and dynamic audio effect.
In-Air Gesture Control & AI Integration
Apart from enhanced audio, the infrared cameras might enable in-air gesture control, allowing users to interact with their devices using hand movements. This could be a game-changer for hands-free navigation, making AirPods more intuitive than ever before.

If Apple sticks to its current 2026 production timeline, the new AirPods could be released in late 2026 or early 2027.
