As 2025 crosses its halfway mark, the Tamil film industry—popularly known as Kollywood—has seen a mix of high-profile and low-key releases. Interestingly, only six films have emerged as theatrical hits so far, according to noted trade tracker Rajasekhar. These successes include both unexpected blockbusters and a film that was stuck in production limbo for over a decade.
One of the most talked-about successes is Madha Gaja Raja, directed by Sundar C and starring Vishal. Despite facing financial delays and being held up for 12 years, the film finally hit theaters this year and managed to become the year’s first theatrical hit.
Following it were Kudumbasthan, Dragon, Good Bad Ugly, Tourist Family, and Maman. Among these, Good Bad Ugly, starring Ajith and directed by Adhik Ravichandran, is the highest-grossing film so far. It has reportedly earned over ₹200 crores globally, with more than ₹100 crores from Tamil Nadu alone.
Dragon, starring Pradeep Ranganathan and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, has also performed well with box office earnings crossing ₹100 crores. Despite these numbers, the surprise winner in terms of profit is Tourist Family, a low-budget movie that grossed over ₹75 crores worldwide—highlighting how smart budgeting can beat star power.
Additionally, Suriya’s collaboration with director Karthik Subbaraj has proven financially rewarding through non-theatrical revenues like retro screenings, satellite rights, and OTT sales. Overall, Kollywood’s first half of 2025 has proven that cinematic success isn’t just about hype—it’s about timing, content, and smart production decisions.
