In a groundbreaking advancement for military technology, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has unveiled a revolutionary design: shoes capable of generating electricity and providing real-time tracking. This innovation, announced on Tuesday, promises to significantly enhance the safety and operational efficiency of armed forces personnel.
The newly developed shoes incorporate Tribo-Electric Nanogenerator (TENG) technology, which allows them to generate electricity with each step. This energy is stored in a device embedded in the soles of the shoes, potentially powering small electronic devices. The shoes also feature Global Positioning System (GPS) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies, facilitating real-time location tracking of soldiers.
The first batch of these high-tech shoes, consisting of 10 pairs, has already been delivered to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Professor Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, emphasized that this innovation will greatly improve the safety, coordination, and effectiveness of Army personnel.
The technology behind these shoes has potential applications beyond the military. It could be utilized for tracking seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, monitoring school children, aiding climbers, and managing worker attendance and performance in factories. Additionally, the TENG technology could be used to analyze athletes’ movements, potentially enhancing their performance.
