Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Wayanad today to assess the damage caused by recent landslides. His arrival at Kannur International Airport is scheduled for 11:05 am, from where he will travel to Wayanad by helicopter. Upon arrival, he will conduct an aerial survey of the disaster-affected areas until 12:10 pm, followed by a ground visit to the impacted sites starting at 12:15 pm. During his visit, the Prime Minister plans to meet with individuals at relief camps and hospitals, and later participate in a review meeting at the Wayanad Collectorate.
Following his visit, PM Modi is expected to return to Kannur at 3:15 pm and depart for Delhi at 3:55 pm. The Wayanad Collector, DR Meghashree, announced that search operations in the affected areas will be suspended for the day due to the Prime Minister’s visit. These operations will resume on Sunday, although public entry to the disaster zones will remain restricted.
In related developments, a Kerala government cabinet sub-committee met with a central team, led by Rajeev Kumar from the Ministry of Home Affairs, to request Rs 2,000 crore in assistance for rehabilitation and relief efforts in the stricken region. The central team, which has been interacting with survivors, acknowledged the severe impact of the landslide and emphasized the need for a detailed study. The State government reported significant damage in the Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchiri Mattam regions, affecting both residential and agricultural areas.
