Kevin O’Leary, famously known as “Mr. Wonderful” from Shark Tank, has teamed up with Frank McCourt, founder of Project Liberty, to propose a groundbreaking acquisition of TikTok’s U.S. operations from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Their mission is to revamp the platform, prioritizing the privacy of its 170 million American users while addressing the national security concerns that have sparked the potential U.S. ban of the app.
The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, signed into law by President Biden, mandates ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. assets by January 19. Failing to comply would lead to the app’s removal from U.S. app stores. The bipartisan-supported law stems from fears that TikTok’s Chinese ownership could pose a national security threat by exposing user data to the Chinese Communist Party.
O’Leary and McCourt plan a major overhaul of TikTok’s data practices, emphasizing user control over personal data. They propose a system where users can choose whether to share their data and, if they do, earn compensation through a share of advertising revenue. This innovative approach aims to build trust while incentivizing user participation.
Beyond the U.S., O’Leary envisions bringing TikTok back to markets like India, Switzerland, and Canada, where data privacy concerns have hindered its operations. His strategy includes making TikTok interoperable with platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, enabling seamless cross-posting and data sharing. O’Leary also projects TikTok’s potential to transform into the world’s largest television network within two years, broadening its user base globally.
The acquisition hinges on two factors: a favorable Supreme Court ruling on ByteDance’s divestiture and the company’s willingness to sell under legal pressure. O’Leary emphasized the global economic implications, noting that a fair resolution is in China’s interest, given the significant investments held by sovereign wealth funds in ByteDance.
This initiative represents a transformative approach to TikTok’s operations, with an emphasis on privacy, interoperability, and international expansion, which could reshape the platform’s future and global reach.
