In a recent development straining Canada-India relations, Canada has blocked access to social media accounts and pages of The Australia Today, a prominent Indian diaspora news outlet, following the release of a press conference featuring India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Jitarth Jai Bharadwaj, Managing Editor of The Australia Today, expressed gratitude to supporters and reaffirmed the outlet’s commitment to free and open journalism.
Bharadwaj acknowledged the challenges brought on by the Canadian government’s restrictions, describing the experience as “difficult” for the team and supporters of journalistic freedom. He highlighted that despite the barriers, unwavering support from the community has strengthened their resolve. “Whether it was sharing our coverage on alternative platforms, speaking out for press freedom, or simply showing support, every effort mattered,” Bharadwaj stated, emphasizing appreciation for the solidarity shown by their audience.
He also affirmed the outlet’s dedication to maintaining an “open and inclusive media landscape,” vowing to continue sharing important stories despite obstacles. The Australia Today remains resolute in its mission to provide accurate, transparent news that brings vital perspectives to the public.
In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) criticized Canada for hypocrisy regarding freedom of speech, accusing the Canadian government of selectively enforcing media restrictions. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted Canada’s alleged double standards, noting that it simultaneously claims support for free expression while limiting the platform of a key diaspora news source. Jaiswal added that the situation reflects deeper diplomatic concerns, with Jaishankar previously condemning Canadian policies that allow anti-India rhetoric to flourish unchecked.
