India has implemented e-passports (biometric passports) for its citizens, which are combined paper and electronic travel documents with an embedded RFID chip and antenna. These passports, identified by a gold-colored insignia on the front cover, store biometric data and personal information securely on the chip. The Indian government has been gradually rolling out e-passports in various cities.
The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chip, which is integrated into the passport, is one of the unique characteristics of the ePassport. The holder’s personal information and biometric data are stored on this chip. The document’s additional layer of protection is a significant advantage. In addition to being digitally signed on the chip, personal information will be printed on the booklet. Immigration officials worldwide can securely authenticate this, preventing fraudulent operations and protecting passports from forgeries.
Do you have to replace your existing passport?
Indian citizens who currently hold a valid passport are exempt from having to apply for an ePassport. Until the expiration date, all passports will remain valid. However, if the passport office is issuing ePassports, all citizens who apply there will receive them when they apply for renewal after they expire. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, it might take many months for the ePassport to be phased out, affecting all passport offices throughout the country.
How to apply for a new passport or a renewal?
Go to India’s Passport Seva website, and under services, click on apply for fresh/re-issue passport. If you do not have an account, register for a new one. Select your Regional Passport office based on your current location, which will then decide the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) you need to visit. Fill up your details, and ensure they are accurate before applying, as changes can not be made later. After submission, a unique Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated. Pay and schedule your appointment. Select your preferred PSK. After the appointment is confirmed, you will receive an SMS confirmation. Carry all essential documents when visiting the PSK. In case of minor applicants (below 4 years of age), also carry a recent passport-size photograph (4.5 X 3.5 cm) with a white background.
