The global gaming landscape is witnessing significant transformation driven largely by emerging economies, particularly in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, with India at its forefront. These markets now constitute 80% of the world’s gamers, making them pivotal for game developers aiming to expand in 2024.
According to Newzoo, APAC leads the global gaming market with 1.741 billion players, commanding a 54% market share. Following are the Middle East and Africa with 511 million gamers (16% share), and Latin America with 316 million (10% share). In terms of market value, APAC leads with $87.9 billion, despite a slight annual decline, followed by the Middle East and Africa at $6.8 billion, and Latin America at $8.4 billion.
India emerges as a crucial market within APAC, projecting revenue of $3.2 billion and an annual growth rate of 11.69% from 2024 to 2027. The country boasts a large and growing middle class with a strong inclination towards online gaming across mobile, PC, and console platforms, making it an attractive destination for game companies looking to broaden their reach.
Central to India’s gaming boom is the widespread adoption of smartphones, with over 700 million internet users primarily accessing the web through mobile devices. Mobile gaming dominates, driven by popular titles like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and Call of Duty Mobile, which boast millions of daily active users.
India’s demographic profile, with over half the population under 25, presents a lucrative opportunity for the gaming industry. This tech-savvy and youthful audience exhibits a diverse appetite for gaming genres ranging from action-packed shooters to complex strategy and casual puzzle games.
Beyond entertainment, the gaming sector in India has spurred economic growth through job creation in game development, graphic design, animation, and esports. The burgeoning esports scene is attracting significant investments, with major tournaments offering substantial prize pools and drawing viewership comparable to traditional sports.
Investment in India’s gaming sector is at an all-time high, with both domestic and international investors funding game development studios, esports organizations, and streaming platforms. Government initiatives like Digital India further bolster the industry’s growth by promoting digital infrastructure and innovation.
However, navigating challenges such as payment methods remains critical for sustained growth in these emerging markets. Issues like limited payment options, delayed payouts for gaming events, and consumer trust in digital transactions pose hurdles. Game companies must diversify payment methods to include digital wallets, instant payments, and mobile money to cater to the preferences of gamers in these regions.
Looking ahead, India’s gaming industry promises immense potential driven by its large population, increasing investments, and vibrant esports ecosystem. As technology advances and internet accessibility expands, India is poised to establish itself as a global hub for gaming, offering vast opportunities for developers, investors, and gamers alike.
