Call to Postpone Puthupally By-Election : Congress Block Committee Files Complaint

The Congress block committee is urging for a postponement of the Puthupally by-election, citing concerns related to the upcoming festival at Manarkad church. To address the issue of potential disruptions due to the festival’s large crowds, the committee plans to lodge a complaint with the Central Election Commission. They propose either conducting the election before September 1 or after September 8 to avoid clashes with the festive period lasting from September 1 to 8. The committee’s reservations have been communicated to the party leadership.

With just a month until the Puthupally by-election, the announcement of the election came earlier than anticipated. The deadline for candidate submissions in the constituency is set for August 17, with public voting scheduled for September 5. The results revealing Oommen Chandy’s successor in Puthupally are anticipated to emerge on September 8.

In the meantime, while Chandy Oommen has been named as the Congress candidate, the CPIM candidate is yet to be unveiled. Reports suggest that the announcement of the CPIM candidate will take place on Saturday, coinciding with the Kottayam district secretariat meeting today.
