Canada’s Visa Rule Revision Challenges International Students, Triggers Reverse Immigration Trend

The Canadian government’s recent revision of visa rules is posing challenges for international students considering Canada as their study destination. The Ministry of Immigration has doubled the required amount for living expenses for student visa applicants, now demanding proof of having 20,635 Canadian dollars (over Rs 17 lakhs) in addition to tuition fees. This marks a significant increase from the previous requirement of ten thousand Canadian dollars.

The rationale behind this policy change is to ensure the welfare of students, with the government stating that those arriving with only ten thousand dollars often face financial struggles in Canada. However, this move has led to a ‘reverse immigration trend,’ with approximately 42,000 people returning from Canada in the initial six months of this year, significantly higher than the numbers in the preceding years (93,818 in 2022 and 85,927 in 2021).

International students contribute both socially and economically to Canada, but the increased cost of living requirements reflect the real expenses they face. Immigration Minister Mark Miller emphasized that the reforms aim to safeguard students from economic vulnerability and exploitation, intending to provide adequate housing facilities for their success in Canada. Despite these intentions, the government’s move has resulted in a surge in departures, impacting the influx of aspiring learners into the country.
