Inauguration of UAE’s First CSI Church Marks Milestone in Abu Dhabi

After forty-five years of anticipation, the Church of South India (CSI) believers in the United Arab Emirates saw their dreams materialize with the inauguration of the first CSI church in the Emirates. The historic event unfolded on Sunday, with the church opening its doors to worshippers at 4:30 p.m. A consecration service, led by CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese Bishop Dr. Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, marked the auspicious occasion. Alongside Parish vicar Lalji M. Philip and former vicar Soji Varghese, Bishop Cherian officiated the service, signifying the beginning of a new chapter for the CSI community in the region.

To promote peace and harmony, Bishop Cherian, accompanied by Swami Brahmaviharidas, Abdullah Al-Tunaiji, and Ahmed Al Mansoori, planted an olive tree in the church courtyard. The location of the church, situated opposite the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Mureikha’s cultural district, holds significant cultural and spiritual importance. Spanning an area of 12,000 square feet on a 4.37-acre plot of land graciously allotted by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the church can accommodate up to 900 worshippers simultaneously. The construction of this landmark church, completed at a cost of 1.1 crore AED, represents a testament to the unity and diversity thriving in the Emirates’ multicultural landscape.
