The Modi Cabinet is getting a makeover, with a focus on experience and qualifications.
New Delhi: The inauguration of new ministers as part of the first Union Cabinet expansion since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election to a second term in May 2019 has been completed. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to new members of the Council of Ministers.
The new Council of Ministers is being shaped in terms of experience and qualification as the Modi government undergoes a makeover.
Four former Chief Ministers, 18 former state ministers, 39 former MLAs, and 23 MPs have served three or more terms on the new Council of Ministers.
This demonstrates the wealth of experience in the new Cabinet, as the government has been chastised for a lack of bench strength and administrative heft.
The new Council of Ministers will also be an eclectic mix of distinguished qualifications, with 13 lawyers, six doctors, five engineers, seven former civil servants, and 46 ministers with Central Government experience.
This is also a youthful-looking Cabinet, with an average age of 58 and 14 ministers under the age of 50.
In terms of gender, the Council of Ministers includes 11 women, two of whom hold Cabinet positions.
On Wednesday evening, 43 ministers took their oaths in the first reshuffle of the Narendra Modi government’s second term. The appointment of the new faces was preceded by the resignations of up to 12 ministers.
