Farmers’ Protest Continues: ‘Delhi Chalo’ March Paused After Clashes, Leaders Announce Future Plans

Amidst the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, farmers protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border have opted to extend their demonstration until February 29, as declared by leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. The decision follows the temporary suspension of the march for two days, prompted by the death of protester Shubhkaran Singh and injuries sustained by police personnel during clashes at the Khanauri protest site. During this pause, the protesters plan to engage in various activities, including a candle march, seminars on farmers’ issues, and the symbolic burning of effigies representing the World Trade Organisation and the central government. Furthermore, meetings are scheduled to discuss their demands, such as the removal of the agriculture sector from the World Trade Organisation agreement and broader issues like the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations and justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Amidst these developments, tensions between farmer leaders and the Punjab government persist, particularly concerning the registration of an FIR for Shubhkaran Singh’s death. The farmers demand not only justice but also seek a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price, a farm loan waiver, and compensation for families affected by previous agitations. The ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest continues to draw attention, symbolizing a broader call for agricultural reforms and addressing the concerns of the farming community.
