Hate speech case; Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan gets 3-year jail term

In the hate speech case of 2019 Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been convicted and a court in Uttar Pradesh sentenced him to a 3-year jail term. A Rampur court found Azam Khan guilty of making provocative remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Azam Khan has been convicted under Sections 153a (promoting enmity between two groups), 505 (statement conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, and section 125 of the Representation of People Act 1951. Earlier this year, he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court of India in an alleged cheating case.
