Protesting Farmers to Resume ‘Delhi Chalo’ Agitation, Security Heightened in the City and Borders

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation by protesting farmers is set to resume, prompting heightened security measures in the national capital. Delhi Police has increased vigilance at Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders in anticipation of the farmers’ renewed movement. The move follows the rejection of the Centre’s proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton crops at minimum support prices (MSP) for five years. Traffic disruptions were reported on major routes like Delhi-Gurugram and Delhi-Bahadurgarh due to increased security deployment to maintain law and order. The protesting farmers, led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, continue to spearhead the movement.

In the recent round of talks, farmer leaders rejected the government’s offer, emphasizing that it did not address the farmers’ concerns adequately. The Delhi Police has implemented robust security measures, sealing the Tikri and Singhu borders with a significant presence of police and paramilitary forces, reinforced with multi-layered barricades. Similar arrangements are seen at the Ghazipur border, with the possibility of its closure. Authorities are determined to prevent any entry into Delhi by protesters, conducting mock security drills and stocking up on 30,000 tear gas shells. As the ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation gains momentum once again, commuters may face increased traffic congestion due to stringent security checks on roads leading to the central part of Delhi.
